Changes in the PSLE 2025 English Exam Format
In PSLE 2025, the English examination’s weightage has changed to better assess oral communication skills while balancing assessment components.
Revised English paper weightage:
Oral Examination: Increased from 15% to 20%
Paper 1 (Situational & Continuous Writing): Decreased from 27.5% to 25%
Paper 2 (Written Paper): Decreased from 47.5% to 45%
Students should focus on improving speaking skills through reading aloud, practicing articulation, and participating in structured discussions.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About PSLE 2025
Parents often have important questions about the PSLE system, especially with the recent changes. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers:
What is the PSLE scoring system?
The PSLE scoring system focuses on individual performance rather than peer comparison. Each subject is graded using Achievement Levels (ALs), from AL1 (best) to AL8 (lowest). A student’s PSLE Score is the sum of their ALs across English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue, and Science, with the best possible score being AL4 and the highest possible score AL32.
This system ensures a fairer assessment by reducing fine differentiation between students, allowing each child to focus on their personal academic growth.
Does taking Higher Mother Tongue provide an advantage?
Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) is advantageous only if your child is applying to a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school. There are only nine SAP schools in Singapore, and to gain a posting advantage, your child must achieve a PSLE Score of 15 or lower.
It’s important to note that there are no bonus points for excelling in HMT. Therefore, students should take HMT only if they are confident in managing the additional workload.

With the right preparation, your child can approach PSLE 2025 confidently. Encourage them to start revision early, practice regularly, and strengthen weak areas. Focus on oral communication skills, particularly with the increased weightage in the English oral exam.
